Most navy and marines recruits are likely to travel and go on adventurous training, such as trekking through mountains. There are also many opportunities for sports and fitness training. The downside is that you may have to travel to places you didn't want to go to, and you may be expected to spend a long time away from home, especially if in the navy, with only short gaps between operations and exercises - this can place a strain on your social and family life outside the forces.

In general most people in the navy and marines are pleased with what's available for sports. In 2009 over three-quarters of people in the navy and marines (77-79%) thought the sports facilities were good and just under two-thirds (60-64%) said the opportunities for fitness activities were good.  However, less than half (40-44%) thought there was enough of the sort of adventurous training (i.e. mountain climbing etc.) that appears in the brochures.
