| Would the army help me to get qualifications? |

During training there would be some help available with basic maths and English skills. This would not get you a GCSE because there are no GCSEs available during training, but the level is equivalent to GCSE grade G. Some recruits go on to the next level up, which again is not a GSCE but is equivalent to GCSE grade C. There are very few NVQs available during initial training and these are equivalent to GCSE grade C maximum. If you joined the army straight from school, the training institution you would go to does not offer apprenticeships leading to recognised professional qualifications in civilian trades. If you join a branch of the army offering a trade (e.g. Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) then the educational opportunities are generally better. In some cases there are university degrees available but these opportunities are very limited. In 2011, a half of soldiers (50%) thought the educational opportunities were good, 19% said they were not and 31% were neutral. Important: You might have to agree to stay longer in the forces if you took a course as part of your work. |
