How much sport / travel / adventure is there in the army? Print E-mail

Most army recruits are likely to travel and go on adventurous training, such as trekking through mountains. The downside is that you may have to travel to places you didn't want to go to, and you may be expected to spend a long time away from home, with only short gaps between operations and exercises - this can place a strain on your social and family life outside the forces.

There are also many opportunities for sports and fitness training. Several sports champions have been in the army, including Kelly Holmes.  In general most soldiers are pleased with what's available for sports. In 2009 three-quarters of soldiers (76%) thought the sports facilities were good and two-thirds (68%) said the opportunities for fitness activities were good.  However, forces recruits were generally not satisfied with the amount of adventure training they got to do - only 39% of soldiers thought there was enough of the sort of adventurous training (i.e. mountain climbing etc.) that appears in the brochures.
