As a soldier, would I have to kill people? Print E-mail

All personnel are trained to kill as part of basic training. If you were joining a front line unit, such as the infantry or artillery, killing other people would be part of your job if your unit was deployed in battle. If you were in a support role, such as logistics or administration, you would be less likely to have to kill people but this is not certain.

Soldiers' experiences are not all the same.  Many soldiers who have served for a long time have never had to kill anyone; others have killed a lot of people as part of their role as a soldier; some soldiers know they have killed civilians by mistake and have to live with that experience for the rest of their lives.  For some soldiers, killing is just what a soldier is supposed to do and must do - it takes courage to do what is a difficult and important job.  Others never come to terms with killing other people - it is a traumatic experience and a cause of combat stress that can last for years.

Think carefully about this.
