| Would I have to kill people? |

The RAF is a fighting force so you would need to be prepared to be part of that. The RAF is mostly a 'stand-off' force, meaning that it usually engages an enemy from a distance. However, if you joined the RAF regiment - the ground fighting force of the RAF - you would need to be prepared for close combat (possibly including hand-to-hand combat) and you may be posted to fight on the ground in a war zone. The experiences of RAF recruits are not all the same. Many have served for a long time and have never had to kill anyone; others have killed a lot of people as part of their role; some know they have killed civilians by mistake (for example, in a badly targeted air strike) and have to live with that experience for the rest of their lives. For some RAF recruits, killing is just what sometimes has to be done - it takes courage to do what is a difficult and important job. Others never come to terms with killing other people - it is a traumatic experience and a cause of combat stress that can last for years. Think carefully about this. |
